TOM TAYLOR is eager to put himself in the reckoning for a first team place at Wrexham.
Brian Little has handed the 23-year-old midfielder a short term contract that will see him remain at The Racecourse until the January transfer window opens.

London-born Taylor has cancelled his contract with American side Portland Timbers, and Wrexham are awaiting international clearance before completing the deal for the former Derby trainee.

And free agent Taylor, who has also played for Viking Stavanger in Norway, Grimsby Town, Walsall and Halesowen Town, is hoping to play himself into the Wrexham side.

"I had 18 months playing regularly in America but just decided to come back," said Taylor. "I was looking for the chance to get back into British football.

"I have been offered a deal at Wrexham and I am happy with that. I am match fit and will try and force myself into the team.

"I know it is a big squad but I will work hard and try and do the best I can.

"We will have to see how things work out but you have to take it one step at a time, and I will try and get in the team and take it from there.

"Hopefully I get as many games as I can and help Wrexham get promotion."

Taylor impressed Little during a two week trial at The Racecourse in January, but no funds were available at the time.

Taylor is delighted to finally link up with Little, and added: "I saw Wrexham against Oxford and they did well, and it was a great result at Salisbury on Saturday.

"It is a big club that should not be in this division.

"I have kept in touch with Brian Little. He is a good guy and a good coach, someone I want to work for."

With left-footed Taylor comfortable in a variety of positions, Little was pleased to get the chance to add to his squad before the transfer window closed.

"Tom does not want to go abroad again and he is one of those players who impressed me last season," said Little. "I liked what I saw but could not offer him anything.

"Tom has got a bit of everything about him, can play in a variety of positions and he has played at a decent level.

"I felt we needed to bring in another fresh face while we can."

Another midfielder, Christian Smith, whose current short term deal runs out this week, has also been offered an extended contract.

No-one left The Racecourse yesterday but Little is looking to send some of his squad members out on loan in the coming weeks.

"One or two will go out on loan fairly soon to balance things out," added Little.

"I have spoken to one or two fringe players and we will be contacting clubs in this division, Conference North and Welsh Premier League.

"We think it is better for them to go and play competitive football pretty much at the same level as us, if not the same division which will be to our benefit, and have them back when the time is right."
