SHAUN WHALLEY believes his equaliser two minutes before the break at Salisbury was crucial.
Wrexham went on to score three second half goals and Whalley, who levelled with a fantastic curling effort before rounding off the scoring in injury time, said getting back in the contest before the interval was important.

"I have gone the last couple of games without scoring so I was made up to get another two goals," said Whalley, who has four goals in total this season.

"And I am looking to score a few more in the next few games.

"There is a long way to go this season and my first was a good goal. It was a critical goal because it was just before half-time and it got us in at 1-1 and gave us something to build on second half.

"If we had gone in 1-0 down it could have been a struggle, but we came out second half and really dominated. I thought we deserved a 4-1 win."

Whalley is just one goal behind leading scorer Jefferson Louis who took his tally to five with a brace at Salisbury. "Me and Jeff are good mates off the pitch as well so I am not really too concerned," said Whalley.

"Obvioulsy I like scoring goals but it is not a race between me and Jeff to be leading scorer."

Whalley started Wrexham's opening five matches this term up front but switched to the left wing at Salisbury and believes he had one of his best games for the Reds.

"I played a lot at left-wing for Accrington Stanley last season and the season before that, so it is not a problem," he added.

"To be honest, I thought I played better today than I have done in most of the other games when I have played up front.

"As I said when I first came here, I can play left, right or up front even - it is not a problem."

For the second successive away game, Wrexham fell behind to an early goal, but Whalley was pleased to see them battle back.

"We have done it a couple of times this season where we started slowly," he added.

"It is as if we are trying too hard at the start, with loose passes and stuff like that.

"But once we got into the game today, and because we scored just before the break, we absolutely dominated the second half."

And manager Brian Little was delighted with Whalley's contribution: "We found Shaun every bit as comfortable out wide as he is up the middle – in fact probably more dangerous out wide," said Little.

"Pre-season when we had injuries he played up the middle and did well but we just found that he has got an eye for goal even from that wide position."
