LEVI MACKIN today admitted he is disappointed to see the season end.
The 22-year-old has revelled in a central midfield role in recent weeks for Wrexham after being recalled early from his loan spell at relegated Blue Square Premier Division outfit Droylsden.

Mackin started Wrexham's final four matches of the season and netted his first senior goal for the club on Saturday when the Reds' ended their 87 year membership of the Football League with a 4-2 victory against Lincoln CIty at Sincil Bank.

Delighted to have been given a chance in the first team by manager Brian Little, Mackin is just gutted that the campaign has ended.

"It's been a good few weeks but the season has finished too early for me," said Mackin today.

"I have come back from Droylsden and have been enjoying the games I have played in, and feel I have done well.

"Going out on loan has helped me because I was playing regularly, and it gave me some experience.

"Droylsden liked me there and I played a lot.

"They were disappointed to see me come back early, so I suppose I must have done okay for them.

"The manager wished me all the best, but I wanted to come back and play for Wrexham, as Wrexham is my club.

"I am just disappointed that the season has finished.

"I was delighted with the result on Saturday – but gutted how the season has gone for us."

Mackin, a product of the youth set-up, was handed his Wrexham debut late in the 2003-04 season and has made more substitute appearances than starts in subsequent seasons.

A regular scorer for the reserves, Mackin finally got his first goal for the first team when he opened the scoring against Lincoln at the weekend.

Delighted to be off the mark, Mackin, who has one year left on his contract, is hoping to add to his tally next season.

"I thought we had done well first 20 minutes at Lincoln and deserved a goal," said Mackin.

"I was delighted to score my first goal for Wrexham.

"Wes whipped it in and I got my head to it. I am not sure if their lad got a touch after me but I am taking that one.

"I have got a few in the reserves this year and quite a lot for them last year. But I would prefer to get a lot more in the first team, although I have not played that much.

"I do get a lot from outside the box for the reserves but I will take any that come."

Despite starting five of the opening seven games of the campaign, and lining up on the substitutes' bench in the other two matches, Mackin has found opportunities limited at The Racecourse, and only went on to start two more matches – the 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield on New Year's Day, and 4-2 reversal at Llanelli nine days later – before being allowed to go to Droylsden on loan.

But that spell was cut short when Little turned to his younger players for the final four matches of the season.

Little has been impressed with Mackin's form and the Wales under 21 international is pleased to have been complimented by his manager: "I am happy to hear the gaffer speak so highly of me," he said.

"I must have been doing something right for him to praise me."

First year professional Wes Baynes also got his first two senior goals at Lincoln, while Neil Taylor, named Young Player of the Season, has also made a big impact in his first season.

And Mackin said the club has a bright future with the quality of young players coming through and he is hoping Wrexham can launch a promotion bid when they line up in the Blue Square Premier Division in August.

"I have got a year left on my contract and I am just hoping I come back fit for pre-season and play as much as possible next season," added Mackin.

"There are a lot of talented youngsters at the club so we should have a decent bunch.

"The gaffer will add a bit of experience to help the younger players along so if we get the right mix, hopefully we should go well.

"We will try and do as well as we can and hopefully bounce back up straight away."

While Mackin is contracted until next summer, a number of other players were due to hear today if they will be offered new deals by Little.

Neil Roberts, Chris Llewellyn, Steve Evans and Danny Williams are among the players out of contract and Little was holding talks with his players today.

Little, who has announced an overhaul of the his squad, has already wielded the axe by releasing five players and making another five available for transfer. Four loan signings have also been told they have no future at The Racecourse.
