Little looking to add further new arrivals
BRIAN LITTLE today described Wrexham's remaining pre-season signings as an important part of his rebuilding process.
Three new arrivals – midfielder Paul Carden and strikers Simon Brown and Jefferson Louis – have already been snapped up and Little has expressed an interest in adding further to the squad, although the exact number is dependant on how many of the five transfer listed players move on.
Little has been linked with a number of players including midfielder Tom Kierney, under contract at troubled Halifax Town, and winger Ricky Shakes, who has been released by Brentford.
Shakes, one of a number of players to have been shown around The Racecourse, has revealed he would be willing to drop down a division.
Little admits he is interested in Shakes but stressed that an offer has not yet been made to the 23-year-old.
Hoping to announce another signing this week, Little said the next couple of additions to his squad were crucial.
"I have spoken to a lot of people and Ricky is one we are interested in," said Little today.
"But we have not made Ricky an offer.
"It is pleasing that someone can come here, be shown around and be impressed, and supposedly say that he would like to sign. It shows the type of work we are doing behind the scenes.
"Jefferson has come in from the south and it proves we can bring people in from further afield.
"I have said I wanted to change the team and the next few moves are important.
"I am hoping for another two new signings at least, though the situation with the five transfer listed players dictates things, but we are closing in on a couple of things."
Anthony Williams, Richard Hope, Silvio Spann, Sam Aiston and Michael Proctor are the players placed on the transfer list as part of Little's overhaul of the squad and some of the five have been attracting interest from other clubs.
But even though he is happy for them to leave Wrexham, Little said the fact other clubs may be ready to offer any of the five players contracts is not unexpected.
"I am not surprised. Things did not go especially well for players like Richard but it did not go well for other people either," said Little.
"Some of them will go back to the Football League and if someone comes in for Richard, I will wish him well if he moves on.
"We have to change our own house and I am just trying to do my job.
"Something could happen before they move on and if we sign a player in their position, it hits home a bit harder for them.
"My job is to try and improve the team and if it influences people moving on then that is part of the business."
The Wrexham squad next season will be boosted by two products of the club's youth system, goalkeeper Chris Maxwell and defender Chris Marriott, who have penned their first professional contracts.
Full-back Carl Tremarco and centre-back Steve Evans have also re-signed for the Reds but winger Matty Done has not yet decided whether to accept the new contract offer.
Clubs in the Football League have been tracking Done, who celebrates his 20th birthday on Sunday, but Little is not surprised by the interest shown.
"I have spoken to Matty and I know people are interested in him," added Little. "Matty said he would like to stay in the Football League and I am not surprised there has been interest from league clubs.
"Like other things, it will sort itself out."
