ANDY FLEMING is the fittest player at Wrexham – and that's official.
Midfielder Fleming was the last man standing when the club's Sports Scientist Andy O'Boyle put the Reds' players through their paces in a true test of stamina before embarking on their summer break.

It was not the first time in these strict fitness tests that Fleming has broke the pain barrier to beat his team-mates and the 20-year-old knows that stamina is also an important component of his game on the football pitch.

"It is called a yo-yo test and it is tough," said Fleming today.

"You have to sprint 15-20 yards and back, and then get a brief rest.

You keep doing that but each time the speed goes up and so do the levels.

"It does get very tiring and people drop out until there is just one person left.

"You just have to keep going until you can't take any more and I happened to win.

"I have done well in fitness tests in the past and won this test before.

"I have always been confident in my stamina and don't have a problem with my fitness level.

"It is important for matches, especially for me as I am a midfielder and need to be able to run box to box all game."

The Wrexham players were all set individual fitness programmes they have to adhere to before returning for pre-season training on June 27 when they can expect more gruelling tests at Colliers Park.

"This was our last test before the summer and then all the players were given fitness and strength programmes we have to stick to before we report back for pre-season," said Fleming.

"That is to make sure we are ready when we return to training at the end of June.

"Even though the season finished in May, the work continues."

A product of the club's youth system, Fleming made his Wrexham debut as an early substitute at Darlington in January 2007, and then manager Brian Carey handed him his first start in the goal-less derby draw against Chester City at The Racecourse the following month.

Having signed a two-year deal last summer, Fleming had to wait until January 2008 for his first taste of action last season when he made a substitute appearance in the defeat at Grimsby Town.

Two starts and another run-out from the bench followed late in the season as manager Brian Little turned to younger members of his squad when Wrexham's fate was sealed.

With one-year left on his contract, Fleming admits the 2008-09 season will be a huge one for his career and he is hoping for more opportunities in the side.

"I had a bit of a chance at the end of last season when the manager showed faith in the young players," said Fleming.

"Hopefully I will get a few more games this season and prove to the manager that I can do a job.

"It is a big season for me.

"I have to build on the last two seasons, when I have played a couple of games, and try and step it up by playing more often.

"I feel that if I do well in pre-season, I will get my chance.

"But I have got to perform well – it is a big season and I have got to show the manager I deserve a place.

"I am looking forward to coming back for pre-season and I will give it a good go."

Wrexham begin their Blue Square Premier campaign in August and Fleming admitted it was important the Reds get off to a decent start in their quest for promotion.

"We have got to try and get back up at the first attempt," added Fleming.

"That has got to be the aim, although we know it won't be easy.

"We have to aim for a good start and get a few early wins on the board to set us off."
