MICHAEL PROCTOR is determined to win his place back in the Wrexham side.
Striker Proctor, one of a number of players transfer listed by manager Brian Little following the club's relegation from the Football League, made his first appearance of the season from the substitutes' bench in Tuesday's disappointing 1-0 defeat against Burton Albion at The Racecourse.

After being made available for transfer in May, Proctor insisted he was more than happy to stay at Wrexham and fight for his place in the team.

And former Sunderland frontman Proctor, who was linked with Chester City before the August transfer window closed, maintains that is still his aim.

"There was a little bit of interest but once I knew there was a chance of being involved here I wanted to stay and fight for my place," he said today.

"I will just keep working as hard as I can, keep working hard in training and doing my best to be involved as often as possible.

"That is where I want to be – on the pitch and doing my bit.

"It is important to show the right attitude. I have said all along that even though I have been transfer listed, while I was here I would give my all and nothing has changed.

"I want to be playing so I will do my best to be in the side, and work as hard as possible."

Proctor, whose contract at The Racecourse runs until the summer of 2110, ended last season as Wrexham's leading scorer with 12 goals, netting in four consecutive games in March.

But after seeing Wrexham lose their relegation battle, Proctor admitted that despite being put on the transfer list he wanted to stay and help the Reds launch a promotion bid this term.

"I said from the word go I was happy to stay at Wrexham," said Proctor. "I enjoy it here, there is a great bunch of lads, and a great set-up.

"I said at the start of the season that because of last season, a lot of us who were here then have got something to prove to the fans, and try and give something back.

"They did not deserve what happened.

"I think it is important for me to do as well as I can while I am here to try and get us back in the Football League."

Having previously not even made the substitutes' bench this term, Proctor was brought on with 12 minutes remaining against Burton on Tuesday.

And he was delighted with the response from supporters – many of whom are divided about the striker's previous omission from Reds squads – when he took to the pitch, but obviously disappointed with the result.

"It was nice to be back in the squad," admitted Proctor.

"Unfortunately the result did not go our way and I was disappointed with that but it is great to be involved again.

"The reception I got from the fans was fantastic. I appreciate the support that they gave me so that was a positive out of the game for me on a personal note.

"But it would have been nice if we could have given the fans something to shout about because we are all disappointed with the result."

After trailing following a defensive error, Wrexham found it tough to break down Burton although Simon Brown twice struck the woodwork and also headed narrowly wide on another occasion.

And Proctor was disappointed that Wrexham, who saw their 100 per cent record at The Racecourse come to an end, did not make the most of their goal scoring opportunities when they came up against a stubborn Burton backline.

"I think we created a few chances and were unlucky on a couple of occasions," added Proctor. "We hit the bar twice and things could have worked out differently on another day.

"We will try and take positives from that and we have another big game at Cambridge on Saturday.

"We have started the season quite well, especially at home, but Burton got the early goal and they shut up shop. They put men behind the ball and, credit to them, they were fairly solid at the back.

"But we had chances to get ourselves back in and we are disappointed not to have been able to take any of them."
