Bangor-on-Dee stage their popular Wrexham Race Day meeting tomorrow (August 15).
It is ironic that the inhabitants of Wrexham will be flocking to Bangor on Dee, because from 1807-58 the locals would have been going to the Wrexham Races at the old racecourse ground, the home of the Dragons football Club.

These were prestigious
races at one time with the Wrexham Gold Cup worth 100gns, which was the highlight of the popular three day fixture.

The most colourful winner of this race was Euphrates, who was owned by the infamous Squire Mad Jack Mytton, who was so infatuated with the horse that he named his eldest son after the horse.

Pony Racing took place at the racecourse in Wrexham from 1890 to 1912.

Pony Racing will also be taking place at Bangor tomorrow with two races being staged for 11-15 year olds, it is worth reflecting that the greatest jockey of the 19th century Fred Archer rode his first ever winner on a pony race at Bangor on a mare called Maid Of Trent in 1868, aged just 10 years of age.

Chester-based clerk of the course, Ed Gretton, lists the going as good with good to soft in places. Speaking earlier in the week, he said: "We are due a few heavy showers and after that the ground is set to dry up and become a bit quicker, the going should be good on the day."

Racing comes under starters at 2.30pm with bangorondeeraces.co.uk novices hurdle. The opener can go to the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Rory Boy, who never came off the bridle when beating Elbistan readily by 7 lengths at Perth. If absent the Alan King trained Ruff Diamond will be my revised selection.

One of the feature races on the card is the £20,000 betterbetcorbett Dee hurdle over two miles and a furlong.

Alan Swinbank has laid out his mare Little Lu (Nap) for this race, the daughter of Danehill Dancer has won four out of five starts, her last two victories came at Market Rasen, the latter when she beat Ursis with plenty in hand. I would recommend a little each way on the Pipey runner Mutual Friend.

Another one of the feature races on the card is the Genesis Wealth Management Novices Handicap hurdle over two miles and a furlong.

Woodcraft trained locally at Cholmondeley by Donald McCain is expected to go very close by his trainer, speaking earlier in the week McCain said: "He ran really well at Perth last time out when he just tired on the run in after leading at the last, he has come on a lot from that race and I am very pleased with his work at home, and we go to Bangor with a great chance."

McCain also gives an each way chance to his charge Iced Tea in the Maple Leaf Financial Group handicap chase over three miles.

Speaking earlier in the week, he said: "I know the form does not look good, as he has two pulled up next to his name, and if you look at his next to last race when he was pulled up in the summer national at Uttoxeter when he did not seem to stay, but ran well for most of the race, then if he reproduces that run then I think he has a hell of a chance."

I would advise readers to have a saver on the Bob Buckler trainer He's A Gaffer, the Oscar gelding was not extended to beat the Bangor Final winner Border Fusion cosily by six lengths at Stratford last time out.

The Llangollen Handicap Chase over two and a half miles can go to to the aptly named Different Class from the Jonjo O'Neill yard, who looks well in off his current handicap mark, especially on the geldings run last time out after his decent second to Left Hand Drive at Uttoxeter, now that the handicapper has relented he could run up a sequence after Bangor.

The Getting Out stakes at 5.25pm is the Wrexham Maiden Hurdle over two and a half miles.

Readers can finish with a profit on the last with the Paul Blockley trainer Profits Reality, who will be making his debut after winning on the level at Newmarket last month, when beating Candle by half a length.

Donald McCain hopes to run three in the race, although he said that he cannot split them, reading between the lines I would go for Grasscutter as the stables main chance.

Bangor on Dee will be running their usual free bus service to the racecourse, which leaves the Wrexham General Railway station at 1pm, the return leg is 5.45pm.
