CANOEING: Jean and Steve make waves in national event

TWO Chester Canoe Club members have been crowned national champions.
Jean Ashley won the over 49 years K1 National Women's Marathon Championships, and Steve Chorley clinched the over 64 years K1 age group title at Worcester, on the River Severn.
Melvin Swallow was third in the over 49 years K1 age class and Jean Ashley was joined by Adele Blakeborough to finish runners-up and silver medallists in the over 34 years age group K2 women class. Adele was also third in the over 34 years K1 women's class.
In other National Championship events, Steve Paddock finished ninth in the over 34 years K1 class.
Roger Williams was 14th in the over 44 years K1 class. Bob Scholey was sixth in the over 59 years K1 class and Steve Chorley and Bob Scholey were seventh in the over 54 years K2 class.
Jenny Swallow and Caroline Rowlands were fifth in the under 18 Junior Girls race but were disappointed with their result after getting badly tangled up in a fisherman's line during the race.
In Division Six, Steve Paddock finished sixth, and Jason Bennett 13th, while Roger Williams was 14th and Bob Scholey 23rd.
In Division Seven, Peter Bennett was sixth and joined his son, Jason, in K2 in Divisions Four, Five, and Six combined to finish 16th.
Evan Thompson raced in the Lightning Under 12 class and finished sixth.
Chester finished 13th out of 42 clubs in the team event.
