CHESHIRE JETS suffered miserable back-to-back losses in their weekend programme, writes DENNIS WALL.
Their 109-78 defeat at Sheffield Sharks on Friday night was followed up last night with a 97-91 home loss against Worthing Thunder at the Northgate Arena.

Sheffield picked up their first victory of the season thanks to a convincing defeat of Jets.

In a game that the Sharks dominated from start to finish, the home side bounced out to an early 22-12 lead off the back of a 9-4 run midway through the opening period.

The Jets trimmed the deficit back to 10 points at 34-24 with a 5-0 burst at the start of the second quarter, but the Sharks broke the game open with a 13-0 tear of their own to take the score out to 47-24.

The Sharks held onto their comfortable lead as they went into the locker rooms leading 54-32 at the half.

The second half saw the visitors try to get themselves back into the game and an 8-3 burst got the score back to 57-40.

The Sharks got their outside shooting game going towards the end of the period, and a trio of three-pointers from Perry Lawson, Joel Burns and James Whyte gave the Sharks an 83-54 lead going into the final stanza.

In the final period, the Sharks kept control of the game, and enjoyed their biggest lead of the game at 97-63. Despite a valiant effort to close the deficit by the Jets, the home side held on for the comfortable victory.

Matt Gorman led all scorers in the game netting 22 points for the Sharks, while Chez Marks led the Jets scoring with 21 points.

Jets conceded a devastating 9-2 burst in the final two minutes of the match against Worthing Thunder who went on to register a 97-91 victory.

Janis Ivanovskis was the hero for Worthing with 27 points, which was only eclipsed by Chez Marks' 32 for the home side.

The result was decided in the final 120 seconds as Jets committed five turnovers on their last six possessions to allow Thunder to close the match out.

Although the match was tight at the end of each of the first three quarters (26-22, 48-46 and 73-72) the Jets had held a 10-point lead (69-59) deep into the third period before a Thunder 11-4 burst made it a one- point game again.

Jets coach Paul Smith said overall it was the right result: "It's disappointing that at a crucial part of the match our defence let us down. I was impressed by Worthing and they deserved their victory."
