BASKETBALL - Jets set to home in on Warrington

CHESHIRE JETS will play four of their home games at Warrington this season, writes DENNIS WALL.
The Northgate Arena-based club are keen to broaden their interest across the county after the success of moving last season's final league game to the town.
Jets will be playing the four Warrington home games at the Birchwood centre on Sundays, November 23 (v Scottish Rocks), January 11 (v Newcastle Eagles), March 1 (v Worcester Wolves), and April 5 (v Sheffield Sharks).
Cheshire Jets head coach, Paul Smith, commented, "It's when the fixtures get released that the realities of the new season start to hit home.
"I am really looking forward to renewing old rivalries and meeting new faces – and I am particularly looking forward to crossing swords with Everton Tigers on a regular basis.
"In sport it is rivalries such as these that motivate players, coaches and spectators alike. Our squad is really beginning to take shape now and I am as sure as I can possibly be that we will have a team capable of competing with the best."
Cheshire Jets director, Pete Hawkins, confirmed: "We have been in negotiation with several other players, including some real fans' favourite from the last season or two and we should soon be in a position to announce further additions to the roster.
"Looking at the fixtures tells us that we will need the strongest possible squad if we are to be able to make an impact in this most competitive of competitions.
"The expertise of our chief coach and the staunch support of our main sponsors BiG Storage suggest that we are really on the way."
Jets open their league season on Friday, September 26, when they travel to play Milton Keynes Lions, and the first home game, on Sunday, September 28, sees them taking on last season's surprise packet, Worcester Wolves, the team that Chuck Evans, the new Jets playmaker, represented last year.
October sees a game with perennial rivals Sheffield Sharks, with an extra spark added by the fact that latest signing Alto Virgil played for them last year.
The Jets first foray into the season's second competition, the BBL Cup, begins on October 19 when they entertain London Capitals, and should they win this game a road trip to reigning League champions Newcastle Eagles on October 31 awaits.
January marks the start of the BBL Trophy group stages and the Jets have a proud record in this competition as they were winners for four consecutive seasons between 2001-4.
They have been drawn in a group with closest geographical rivals, Everton Tigers, and the oldest surviving BBL franchise, Leicester Riders, on a home and away basis with only one team to qualify for the later stages.
If the close proximity between Jets and Tigers were not enough to promote interest – the presence of ex-Jets stalwarts Delme Herriman and John Simpson should ensure that – not to mention the return of Calvin Davis to this side of the Mersey.
Meanwhile, Cheshire Jets recently invited any interested and locally-based players to attend trials at the University College Chester campus.
Jets' head coach, Paul Smith, helped supervise the sessions which acted as a recruiting exercise for the club as part of it's community-related
initiatives.
