A GROUP of youths set fire to a patch of grass, causing smoke to billow onto a railway line.
Firefighters were called out to a pathway at Boundary Lane, Saltney, shortly after 6pm on Tuesday. They were at the scene for about 20 minutes.

The pathway runs by the railway line and smoke from the fire was billowing over the tracks. It is believed a train driver may have reported the fire.

White Watch crew manager at Chester Fire Station, Mark Beechey, said: "It was difficult to access because it was a long way down there so we took the waterback pack.

"We were there for about 20 minutes, but it took more time to get the resources up there than putting out the fire. We then made sure there were no other hot spots.

"Smoke was travelling over the railway line. We contacted Network Rail and assured them it was going to be out soon so they continued to run at normal speeds."
