MORE than 50 protesters staged a demonstration outside Shell Stanlow oil refinery.

About 60 hauliers and farmers arrived at the site at 8.30pm on Thursday and by midnight there was up to 100 demonstrators.

The pressure group behind the action was Transaction 2007, which was lobbying Shell about increasing fuel prices around the country.

Cheshire Police got the call at about 8.40pm.

Cheshire Police spokesman Dave Murray said that the protests were peaceful and that no arrests were made.

He said: "All the protesters left the area by 12.40am."

Public affairs assistant from Shell, Rachel Evans, said: "Shortly after 8.30pm last night, Thursday, May 1, a group of approximately 50 people gathered close to the Shell Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port to protest against high fuel prices.

"The group temporarily blocked access to Oil Sites Road and caused Shell to delay the movement of fuel by road.

"Normal road movements were quickly resumed and the protesters left the area at midnight."
