THE SECOND Up The Wall performance art event has been labelled a success after more than 1,800 people braved the weather to show their support.
Chester Performs staged the three-day celebration of the city's history and architecture in light, sound and art. Visitors followed a route around the Cathedral and part of the walls to see diverse performances and art installations, involving 35 artists.

Save the Family created a World of Wool and performed songs on St Werburgh Street, world renowned artists SDNA projected art onto a building in Abbey Square and Chester artist Russell Kirk produced a range of insect light sculptures that lit up the route along the way.

Chris Ingram, who greeted people at the entrance of the Cathedral grounds with songs and poetry, enjoyed the event and is pleased it was a success.

He said: "I think it was hugely successful. I spoke to a lot of people and the general impression was that it was nice Chester was doing something like this. It had a festival feel and you could talk to the acts at the same time. It was good fun because I got to speak to loads of kids and it was the first time ever I had done any singing or playing guitar live, so from my point of view I'm very happy."

Amber Knipe, Chester Performs co-ordinator, said: "This was a tremendous event which really drew people's imagination, despite the terrible weather on the first night.

"It was also special because Chester at night is a magical place.

"With art and light adding to the magic we all saw the city wall and cathedral walls, some of the city's most famous features, in a different light. While it was certainly a family friendly event, promenaders were treated to some quite unusual and unexpected treats.

"We are hoping to develop the event in future years, making it a must see date in everyone's diaries for many more years to follow."

Other artists included Toneflote, Jacqueline McCormick from Chester Dance, Frakture from Liverpool, VJ Germ Gemma Briers and Hayley Wood.
