POLICE and young people are working together to put a stop to the increased targeting of students by criminals.
Students from the University of Chester are working alongside Cheshire police officers in the Garden Quarter area of Chester, where many students live.

An event has been organised between noon and 5pm tomorrow in Chester Students Union where a cam
paign will be launched aimed at minimising attacks on students and thefts from the places where they live.

Rachael Shaw, student co-ordinator for the campaign, said: "We, as students, and Cheshire police, are extremely passionate about what we are doing as very few universities have taken such a pro-active approach to such an important issue for the community."

Only Northumbria and Sheffield universities have tried similar crime-busting tactics before.

Rachael has been affected herself. She and a female friend came close to being attacked and mugged by two men in the Garden Lane area on their way home from a night in town.

"The event will be to encourage as many students as possible to register their personal electrical goods so that in the event they are stolen the police may be able to trace it back to the owner," she said.

"We have been kindly supported by local businesses such as Dominos Pizza, Millies Cookies, Sweet Heaven, Currys and Denton and Hyde, who have all offered us donations as incentives in order to encourage the students to attend."
