AN A-level student has sung his way to £10,000, after hitting all the right notes in a TV contest.
Robert Jeffries, 18, of Handbridge, Chester, triumphed on the Sky One gameshow, Don't Forget the Lyrics.

The singalong show, hosted by Shane Ritchie, tests contestants' lyrical knowledge in a 'fill-in-the-gaps' competition.

Karaoke king Robert beat hundreds of hopefuls to appear on the programme, and sang The Marvelettes classic, Please Mr Postman, in his nail-biting final performance.

Robert, who has just completed his A-level exams at Queens Park High in Chester, said: "I was singing along and the lyrics were on the screen but when they disappeared, my mind went blank.

"I used my mum as my final back-up singer lifeline.

"I knew she would know the rest of the words."

Luckily for Robert, his camera-shy mum, Lesley, knew them off by heart and helped her son to reach a prize total of £10,000.

"I dropped to my knees when I won. I just couldn't believe it!" said Robert, who is hoping to study sports or broadcast journalism at university later this year.

He added: "I can finally take my mum and dad on their dream holiday to Australia to see our family over there, and I've even managed to put some away to give me a kick-start to life after I finish my degree."

Robert can be seen on Don't Forget the Lyrics this Sunday on Sky One at 7pm.
