A FATHER from Chester has spoken out about having to "kick and scream" to get work done on his housing trust home.
Lee Shewan lives on Pulford Road, Blacon, with partner Sarah Ellis and their three children.

They rent the property from Chester and District Housing Trust (CDHT) but are unhappy with maintenance standards.

Mr Shewan, a self-employed taxi driver, says there have been numerous problems with the house.

"We have had a lot of problems with the Trust and we have taken it to a Stage 2 complaint. I have had to kick and scream to get work done and we're still waiting for some jobs to be done," he said.

"Some jobs have taken over a year to be completed."

Mr Shewan said CDHT did replace rotting doors in the house but the work had resulted in damage to the walls and he was still waiting for a bathroom sink to be replaced that was promised a year ago.

He added: "The work that has been carried out has taken a couple of months and it's still not completed. We wanted this done before the new baby arrived and we want to do a house swap but no-one will swap with us, with the house like this.

"Is this happening to other families? People will just get to the point where they think 'that's just the Trust'."

Mr Shewan has been in correspondence with CDHT and has asked for a new bathroom but has been told it doesn't fail the Decent Homes Standard.

It would only meet the requirements for a new bathroom if it was more than 30 years old and in a poor condition.

CDHT has estimated the bathroom has five years of its life cycle remaining.

Sue Bramley, deputy chief executive, said: "Mr Shewan is aware from discussion with the Chester and District Housing Trust complaints panel that a representative will decide a suitable time with him to review the condition of the property and determine what is CDHT's responsibility and what is the tenant's.

"The property meets the Government's Decent Homes Standard for its age and condition. CDHT has already invested in new doors, from a different supplier than normal at request, new windows and a new kitchen.

"The Trust has also given an £100 decorating voucher to help Mr Shewan re-decorate."

A representative has recently visited Mr Shewan's home to asses the property and determine what work needs to be done.
