POLICE are hunting thieves who caused thousands of pounds worth of damage at a historic village church.
A trail of destruction was left at St Oswald's Church in Malpas, near Chester, after thieves stole lead downspouts and roofing from the 13th-century building.

Churchgoers have slammed those responsible.

Doreen Leek, who attends a weekly service at the church, said that it had been subjected to vandalism in recent weeks, and added: "It is awful to think they are doing this to a beautiful church.

"The most recent thing has been taking lead off the roof but there have been other incidents in the past such as glass windows being broken.

"They took some lead from the roof above where the organ is, so it was lucky it didn't rain or it would have been damaged."

Cheshire Police are investigating the incident, which happened overnight on June 16-17.

PC Sharron Beverley said: "An unknown value of lead from the roof and lead downpipes was stolen. There is no CCTV in the area it was stolen from."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
