Despite increased awareness and policing initiatives, criminals are still taking advantage of the city's cyclists by stealing bikes from sheds, outbuildings, gardens and yards.
The main areas targeted by bike thieves are Boughton, Hoole, Kingsway,
Upton and Vicars Cross.
PC Sally Malone, from Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "The thieves seem to be attracted to high value mountain bikes which can have a relatively high resale value.
"However, there have also been thefts of cycles at the other end of the market and we would like to advise all cyclists to reassess their security.
"Bikes should be stored out of sight and securely fastened to a permanent structure.
"When using locks, people should make sure they are good quality and are as resistant as possible to tools such as bolt and chain cutters.
"We are aware of the problem and are stepping up patrols locally as well as sharing intelligence between units in relation to potential suspects.
"Despite this, and improved security measures, there will always be some people who will not be dissuaded from turning to theft.
"Because of this I would advise all residents to make a note of serial numbers, retain detailed descriptions of their bikes and security mark their property.
"Marking your bike with your postcode will mean that, if stolen and recovered, it can be quickly returned."
