Davies to learn from Southport draw
SIMON DAVIES vowed that he would use last night's 2-2 draw at Southport as an important learning curve.
The Chester City boss was disappointed to see his club surrender a 2-0 lead in the pre-season friendly at Haig Avenue.
Goals from Kevin Roberts and Paul McManus put the Blues in the driving seat for the majority of the contest, but the Blue Square North League hosts hit back with two goals in a nine-minute spell after the break.
Davies said: "It was a good work out from my point of view and I found out a lot about the lads.
"Conceding two goals against a team who play two divisions below us is a concern, but I'd rather have that happen now so we can do something about it.
"We haven't had a chance to work on setpieces, but the Southport game gave us an opportunity to pass the ball and get around the pitch."
Davies singled out Paul McManus as City's star man after netting the club's second goal to earn the Blues a 2-0 lead.
He added: "Kevin Ellison could have scored four goals after getting himself in a number of good positions.
"But I was happy for young Macca (Paul McManus) when he got his goal which was good to see, and I thought he was definitely our man of the match.
"Since our fitness coach, Julian Owen, has come on board we have been able to get players like Macca and Paul Rutherford on weights and they are clearly benefiting from that work."
Davies employed trialist goalkeeper, Chris Sanna, from Wrexham, as his shot-stopper from the start of last night's match, before John Danby took over between the posts from the start of the second half.
City also handed central defender Conal Rawlinson, an apprentice at the club, 45 minutes, and he played alongside Paul Linwood, while Andy Mitchell started in attack with summer signing, Ryan Lowe.
The second half provided an opportunity for Davies to see first year apprentice Christian Platt working hard alongside Paul Butler, while summer signing David Mannix showed good touches alongside Mark Hughes and Stephen Vaughan in midfield.
Davies is now preparing his squad for their next friendly match at Vauxhall Motors on Saturday.
He said: "It was too quick for us to name French trialist, Damien Mozika, in the side to face Southport, but our secretary, Tony Allen, is working hard to make sure all the paperwork is complete, so there may be a chance of him playing on Saturday at Vauxhall. I'm desperate for a good look at him.
"Anthony Barry and Shaun Kelly returned to training today, but I'm not going to press them to be fit for Saturday, and I'm not going to push Paul Taylor, Jay Harris, and John Murphy into returns as they are all nursing niggling injuries and knocks."
