SIMON DAVIES was today hoping to strengthen his squad.
The Chester City boss confirmed the Blues had offered two-year contracts to Bradford City's Eddie Johnson, and Yeovil Town's Anthony Barry.

Both players are keen to return to their North West roots and Chester are hopeful that the pair will agree to join the Blues.

Davies said: "They both fit the description of the system I'm looking to implement and we have offered them two-year contracts.

"They were two of the fittest lads at their clubs last season and that's the way we want to go. They are both players that go forward and cause problems for other teams. They are experienced and they have proved themselves at their former clubs.

"Experience doesn't have to mean they are old – just look at our current back four who are young and have got games under their belt.

"Paul Linwood is just 25 years old and the players alongside him in defence are younger.

"Barry and Johnson both have good engines, they can get about the pitch, and I hope we can snap them both up."

Chester-born Johnson, who is a former England youth international, is out of contract at Bradford.

He started his career at Manchester United and has also played for Royal Antwerp, Coventry City, and Crewe Alexandra. Johnson, 23, can play in midfield or as a striker.

And Liverpool-born Barry, 22, impressed as a regular in League One with Yeovil last season after spells with Accrington Stanley and Coventry City.

Barry started his career as a trainee at Everton and made 34 appearances for Yeovil last term.

City owner, Stephen Vaughan, said: "We've offered both of them terms and it is the best we can put forward. Hopefully they will accept."

Meanwhile, former Chester City goalkeeper, Wayne Brown, has signed for Bury after turning down a new deal at Edgar Street.

Brown has signed a two-year deal at Gigg Lane after he decided against extending his stay at League One new boys Hereford.

The move is a coup for Bury as they beat off interest from other clubs to sign the experienced keeper.

Brown's agent Jesse Learoyd-Hill has confirmed the player is looking forward to a new challenge at Bury.

"Wayne is very happy to sign for Bury," Learoyd-Hill said. "He had some great times at Hereford and he wishes them well.

"He is looking forward to the new season and hoping he can help Bury challenge for promotion."
