Beckett open to Chester contact
LUKE BECKETT has invited Chester City to contact him.
The former Blues striker would welcome City getting in touch if they were ready to discuss the possibility of him re-signing for the club.
Beckett, 31, had a successful two years at Chester in the late 1990s, scoring 33 goals in 85 games, and he has top-scored for Huddersfield Town over the last two seasons.
But he has a year left on his contract at Huddersfield and is also the subject of interest from Bradford City and York City.
He said: "Nobody has spoken to me about any interest from Chester, but I'll talk to them and I'm open to offers.
"I had two great years at Chester when I moved there in the summer of 1998. I really enjoyed my time there, but it was just unfortunate that my time there ended with relegation.
"I partnered John Murphy up front and we played well together before John was sold to Blackpool.
"Then-Chester boss, Kevin Ratcliffe, was the best manager I've ever played under. He had me watched in every game I played 18 months before I signed for Chester."
Huddersfield have given League Two club, Bradford City, permission to speak to Beckett, who revealed he had spoken to Bantams' boss, Stuart McCall, and to York City, whose boss Colin Walker was youth team coach to Beckett while he was at Barnsley.
Beckett added: "I've been in and out at Huddersfield, but I've top-scored for the club in the last two seasons.
"Huddersfield have recently signed Keigan Parker and the club has four other strikers including me in their squad, so it doesn't look like there's going to be a lot of room for me this season.
"Huddersfield are wanting to get me away on a good deal, but I also want to make sure I get a good deal at wherever I'm going.
"I've had talks with Bradford City and it seemed to me that they had a few other irons in the fire.
"It is obvious to me that Huddersfield are willing to let me go, but the deal has got to be right for me because I've still one year left on my contract."
Sheffield-born Beckett, who made his Football League debut with Chester, has also played for Chesterfield, Stockport County, Sheffield United, Oldham Athletic, and Huddersfield Town.
He joined Huddersfield in July 2006 for £85,000 in a three-year deal.
n Ex-Chester City full back Simon Marples has joined Alfreton Town.
Sheffield-born Marples made 50 appearances in all competitions for City before deciding to play part-time at the end of last season.
And former Chester player Abdou El Kholti has signed for Woking.
The French-born 27-year-old, who can play on the left side of defence or midfield, was released by Rushden and Diamonds at the end of last season.
Kholti has also played in Switzerland and Morocco as well as for Cambridge, Weymouth and Grays.
