BLUES NEWS - Lambert's Wanderers aiming to secure their play-off place
PAUL LAMBERT intends to see his side taking another important step towards promotion tomorrow.
The Wycombe Wanderers boss expects his team to secure a home victory against Chester after the Adams Park club moved into a play-off position on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win at Grimsby Town.
Lambert was clearly pleased with Wycombe's win at Grimsby: "We were brilliant. After the disappointment of Saturday the lads were unbelievable.
"It was a totally different game to the ones against MK Dons and Peterborough, it was a long trip to Grimsby, but we're delighted to go home with the three points.
"We've played extremely well this season, everyone is really vibrant in the changing room and we've given ourselves a great chance of promotion."
Wycombe are unbeaten in their last five games having drawn against Stockport, MK Dons, and Peterborough, and they have only lost four of their 21 home games so far this term.
The club possess the best home defensive record in League Two, having conceded just 14 goals at Adams Park, thanks to the solid central defensive partnership of Leon Johnson and Mike Williamson.
And Lambert is expected to name an unchanged starting line-up tomorrow, with Leon Knight serving the first of a two-game suspension, and both Matt Bloomfield and goalkeeper Scott Shearer sidelined with long-term injuries.
Lambert will name Frank Fielding in goal as first choice Shearer is out for the season.
Fielding, 19, is on loan from Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season after captaining Rovers' under 18s and playing for Blackburn reserves during the 2006/07 season.
He represented England U19s and attended the same school as former Blackburn striker James Beattie and Motherwell forward Chris Porter.
Russell Martin, Leon Johnson, Mike Williamson, and Craig Woodman will form the defence.
Martin is a former England Youth international who signed from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2004 on a non-contract basis, and impressed enough to earn a full time contract the following summer.
He made his 100th appearance for the club in 2007 and is now one of the first names on the Wycombe teamsheet.
London-born Johnson joined Wycombe after being released by Gillingham last summer.
He had joined Southend as a trainee before moving to Gillingham where he made more than 100 appearances.
Williamson is one of Wycombe's longest serving players having joined on a permanent deal in June 2005 following a successful season-long loan.
He was a trainee with Torquay United before then-Wycombe boss, Tony Adams, signed him.
He has now recovered from a cruciate knee injury sustained in February 2007 which sidelined him for the rest of the year.
Woodman is a left-sided player who arrived at Adams Park last summer following his release from Bristol City.
He had loan spells at Mansfield and Torquay, before joining Wycombe after being released by the newly-promoted Ashton Gate side, signing a two-year deal with Wanderers.
Sergio Torres, Gary Holt, Tommy Doherty, and Stefan Oakes are expected to combine in midfield.
Torres has starred for Wycombe on the right wing this season after two injury-ravaged campaigns.
The Argentine-born player arrived at Adams Park after an impressive pre-season friendly appearance with Basingstoke Town.
After jetting in from his home town Mar del Plata, Torres had unsuccessful trials at Brighton, Woking, and Molesey before making an impact at Basingstoke.
Holt joined Wycombe last summer following his release from Nottingham Forest.
He started his career at boyhood favourites Kilmarnock, winning the Scottish League Cup in 1997, and he won his first Scottish cap in 1999.
He joined Norwich in 2001 for £135,000 and was part of the side that won the Division One Championship in 2003/04, playing almost 200 games in his time with the Canaries.
Doherty signed a permanent deal in January after three successful loan spells at the club.
The Ulsterman has represented Northern Ireland eight times and played at Bristol City before moving to QPR at the start of the 2005/06 campaign.
He was then shipped out to Yeovil in January but arrived at Wycombe on loan before signing permanently in January which keeps him at Adams Park until July 2010.
Oakes is a former Leicester City trainee who signed for Wycombe in June 2005.
He left Leicester to join Walsall prior to an 18 month stint at Notts County, but then-Wycombe boss, John Gorman, signed Oakes on a two-year deal.
Scott McGleish will partner Delroy Facey or John Sutton in the Wycombe front line.
Facey is currently on loan from Gillingham after spells with Hull, Rotherham, Bolton, Bradford, Tranmere, Huddersfield, Oldham, Burnley, and West Brom.
Sutton arrived at Wycombe last summer after turning down offers from a number of other clubs after leaving Scottish side St Mirren.
The former Tottenham trainee spent time on loan at Carlisle and Swindon Town before joining Raith Rovers in 2003.
Sutton was then snapped up by Millwall in 2004 but then returned to Scotland to sign for Dundee.
He moved to St Mirren in 2005 and scored 30 goals in 75 appearances.
THE ONE TO WATCH: Scott McGleish
WYCOMBE'S main threat to the Chester defence will undoubtedly Scott McGleish.
The Barnet-born striker has played a key role in helping his team's promotion push after bagging 25 goals so far this season.
McGleish, 34, joined Wycombe in January 2007 after being placed on the transfer list by Northampton Town.
He had made his name with his hometown club after brief spells with Charlton, Peterborough, and Leyton Orient.
McGleish had a three and a half year spell at Underhill in which he twice helped the club reach the League Two play-offs.
He moved to Colchester before joining Northampton on a free transfer in 2004.
